Title: Cave Stream by Darin Anderson ( 010)

Cave Stream
Description: Midway betweeen Christchurch and Hokitika lies Arthur's Pass. Driving through this pass between the mountains makes you appreciate the remoteness of the area. I stumbled upon something called the Cave Stream, and while unprepared for the journey I simply could not pass up this adventure. The Cave Stream, ironically enough, is a stream that passes through an underground cave. This cave, however, you can actually walk in the stream from where it enters the cave until it exits over a 1/4 mile away. And unlike similar attractions in the U.S., you assume all potential risk while in the cave which actually adds to the experience in my opinion. The stream is very cold, so wetsuits are recommended. Often the water is up to your waist, other times it goes up to your chest. Waterproof flashlights are another requirement, there are no lights inside the cave and you do not want to try to do this trek by touch alone. Provided these things and a sense of adventure it is a most memorable experience, wading through this stream in the bowels of a cave hundreds of feet underground. The sites are a one of a kind and something few people ever get to experience!
